ACTG2

The ACTG2 gene encodes the protein gamma-2 actin, a member of the actin protein family. Known as actin gamma 2, smooth muscle, this protein is crucial for smooth muscle contraction, particularly in the urinary and intestinal tracts. It is involved in maintaining the cytoskeleton, which is essential for cell shape and function. ACTG2 is associated with various diseases, including visceral myopathy and megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome. Research into ACTG2 mutations and their effects on smooth muscle function has led to potential therapeutic targets for these conditions.
