AGTR2

The protein encoded by AGTR2 is Angiotensin II receptor type 2 (AT2R), a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that binds angiotensin II. Unlike the pro-hypertensive AT1R, AT2R mediates vasodilation, anti-proliferation, and pro-apoptotic responses, signaling via PI3K/Akt, MAPK, and NO/cGMP pathways to regulate tissue repair and inflammation.
AGTR2 is linked to cardiovascular disorders (hypertension, heart failure), renal fibrosis, and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s. Selective AGTR2 agonists are under preclinical and early clinical study for neuroprotection and reducing cardiac remodeling, emerging as a promising therapeutic target for these diseases.
