ALKBH1

The protein encoded by ALKBH1 is Alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase alkB homolog 1, commonly referred to as AlkB homolog 1. It belongs to the AlkB family of Fe(II)- and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases, primarily functioning in nucleic acid demethylation by catalyzing the oxidative demethylation of methylated bases in DNA and RNA, thereby regulating epigenetic modifications and gene expression.
ALKBH1 is involved in several key signaling pathways, including cell cycle regulation and DNA damage repair. Dysregulation of ALKBH1 has been linked to various diseases such as cancer, where its overexpression may promote tumor progression by enhancing cell proliferation and genomic instability. Currently, there are no specific drugs targeting ALKBH1 in clinical use, but preclinical studies are exploring its potential as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment through small molecule inhibitors.
