BACE1

BACE1, known in full as β-secretase 1, is a chromosome 11-derived aspartic protease. It is noted for its role in generating Aβ peptides by cleaving amyloid precursor protein (APP), a critical step in Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. BACE1's influence also extends to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases like diabetes and atherosclerosis. As a significant biological target, BACE1 inhibitors are in development for AD treatment and have shown promise for metabolic disease intervention. While the full scope of BACE1's biological impact is under investigation, it has become a focal point in neuroscience and drug development.
