BPIFA2, or BPI fold containing family A member 2, is commonly known as SPLUNC2. A secretory protein expressed mainly in respiratory mucosal epithelia (nasal cavity, trachea), it belongs to the BPI-like superfamily and mediates innate host defense. It exhibits antimicrobial activity against pathogens and regulates airway surface liquid balance, supporting mucosal barrier function.
Altered BPIFA2 expression is linked to respiratory conditions like chronic sinusitis and asthma, where reduced levels may compromise mucosal protection. While no targeted drugs are in clinical trials, its role as a biomarker for airway inflammation or infection is being explored, offering potential for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in respiratory diseases.
