This subunit is pivotal for muscle contraction as it forms calcium ion channels that regulate ion flow, interacting with RYR1 to initiate calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum during excitation-contraction coupling. Mutations in CACNA1S can lead to conditions such as hypokalemic periodic paralysis, thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, and an increased risk for malignant hyperthermia.
