CD83, also known as M6PR, is a type I transmembrane protein expressed on the surface of activated dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a crucial role in immune responses by inducing T-cell-mediated immune responses. CD83 interacts with various receptors, including TLRs and NKG2D, to initiate signaling pathways that regulate immune cell activation and differentiation. In diseases like Alzheimer's, CD83-positive microglia are associated with inflammation and neurodegeneration. Therapeutically, sCD83, the soluble form of CD83, is being explored as a potential treatment for autoimmune diseases and transplant rejection, modulating regulatory mechanisms such as Tregs and tolerogenic dendritic cells.
