CDK5

CDK5, Cytokinin-dependent protein kinase 5, also known as TPKII, was first isolated and screened from bovine brain tissue, and has 58% and 62% homology to cdc2 and cdk2, respectively.
CDK5 is an atypical serine/threonine kinase that needs to be conjugated with its activating factors, p35, p39, or p25, to have kinase activity. Upon binding to CDK5, these activators act primarily in the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and perinuclear regions.
CDK5 plays a role in a variety of biological processes, including neuronal cell migration, axon guidance, synaptogenesis and transmission, and the regulation of apoptosis and cell survival. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), CDK5 is able to phosphorylate tau proteins, leading to their hyperphosphorylation.
