CFI

Complement Factor I (CFI), encoded by the CFI gene, is a serine protease in the complement system, also known as C3b/C4b inactivator. It regulates complement activation by cleaving and inactivating opsonins C3b and C4b—key components of the alternative and classical pathways—thus preventing excessive complement-mediated tissue injury.
CFI acts in the complement cascade pathway. Mutations or deficiencies in CFI are associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Drug development includes monoclonal antibodies targeting CFI to modulate complement activity; several candidates are in clinical trials for treating AMD and aHUS.
