DRD1

DRD1, also known as the dopamine D1 receptor, and by other names such as D1A dopamine receptor or Dopamine D1 receptor, is a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) and a member of the dopamine receptor family. It is encoded by the human gene DRD1. DRD1 is expressed in various regions of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex, striatum, and hippocampus, and is involved in regulating numerous physiological functions. The mechanism of action for DRD1 primarily involves binding to dopamine, activating G proteins, and influencing intracellular signaling pathways. Specifically, DRD1 primarily activates adenylyl cyclase through the Gαs protein, increasing the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP), which in turn modulates the activity of protein kinase A (PKA), affecting cellular physiological responses.

DRD1 plays a role in regulating cognitive function, motor control, emotional responses, and other physiological processes. Its dysfunction has been linked to various neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). DRD1 interacts with other receptors in the dopaminergic signaling pathway, such as DRD2 (dopamine D2 receptor), to collectively influence behavior and emotions. Furthermore, DRD1 is an important target in drug development, with some antipsychotic medications and treatments for Parkinson’s disease acting by modulating DRD1 activity. As such, DRD1 is a key molecule in neuroscience and psychopharmacology research.
