Fidgetin-like 1 (FIGNL1), a AAA+ ATPase superfamily member, is also referred to as FL1. It acts as a microtubule-severing enzyme, using ATP hydrolysis to modulate microtubule dynamics—essential for spindle assembly in mitosis, cell migration, and intracellular cargo transport.
Aberrant FIGNL1 expression links to diseases: overexpression in breast/lung cancers boosts tumor invasion/metastasis; deficiency disrupts spermatogenesis causing male infertility. Drug development targets its ATPase domain, with preclinical small-molecule inhibitors under screening, though no candidates have entered clinical trials to date.
