GABRA2

GABRA2, also known as Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-2, is a highly expressed transmembrane protein in the central nervous system, encoded by a gene in human cells. The mechanism of action for GABRA2 primarily involves assembling with other GABA-A receptor subunits to form functional pentameric receptor complexes, regulating chloride ion channel opening, and thereby playing a role in neural inhibition.

The activity of GABRA2 is modulated by various ligands, including GABA and benzodiazepines. Functional abnormalities of GABRA2 are associated with various neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, genetic variations in the GABRA2 gene are linked to behavioral disorders such as alcohol dependence and schizophrenia. The role of GABRA2 in neurodevelopment is particularly important, as it affects the maintenance and renewal of neural stem cells, participating in the regulation of proliferation and differentiation during embryonic development.
