GABRB1

GABRB1, a member of the GABA receptor family residing in the 4p12 region of chromosome 4, plays a critical role in the central nervous system by binding to GABA and modulating the opening of chloride channels. This action results in neuronal membrane hyperpolarization, reducing neuron excitability and generating inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. GABRB1 is pivotal for the rapid inhibitory synaptic transmission that ensures the nervous system functions correctly. Variations in GABRB1 have been implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia and may also be associated with the development of epilepsy, alcohol dependence, and bipolar affective disorder.
