GABRG1, a gamma subunit of the GABAA receptor, is encoded by the GABAA RG1 gene on chromosome 4. GABRG1 is part of the ligand-gated ion channel family. This protein contributes to inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by binding to GABA and benzodiazepine receptors, which in turn regulate chloride channel opening, hyperpolarize the neuronal membrane, and decrease neuronal excitability, leading to inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Abnormal expression of GABRG1 is linked to several neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, autism, and alcohol dependence, underscoring its importance in maintaining the functions of nervous system.
