GAD1

GAD1, glutamic acid decarboxylase 1, also known as GAD67, is an enzyme that synthesizes the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA from glutamic acid in the brain. It plays a role in synaptic transmission and insulin secretion, with its expression being upregulated in various tumors, particularly impacting the progression and survival rates of colorectal cancer. GAD1's overexpression may help tumor cells adapt to hypoxic, low pH environments and could promote cell proliferation by regulating amino acid homeostasis, separate from its function in GABA metabolism. This enzyme's activities are thus crucial for both neurological function and tumorigenesis.
