GRIN2A

The gene GRIN2A encodes the protein Glutamate Ionotropic Receptor NMDA Type Subunit 2A (GluN2A), a crucial component of NMDA receptors. These receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that play a pivotal role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. GluN2A is involved in the regulation of synaptic transmission and is permeable to calcium ions, which is essential for the activation of various signaling cascades. Mutations in GRIN2A are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including epilepsy and speech disorders. Research into GRIN2A mutations has led to the development of targeted therapies, such as NMDAR coagonists, which aim to modulate receptor activity and improve patient outcomes.
