HTR3A

HTR3A, also known as the 5-HT3A receptor, is a ligand-gated ion channel receptor primarily expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and encoded by the HTR3A gene. This receptor's activation upon binding to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) leads to the opening of ion channels, permitting cation flow and modulating neuronal excitability. HTR3A is crucial for the modulation of pain perception, nausea, vomiting, and mood, and it plays a role in physiological and pathological processes such as gastrointestinal motility, cardiovascular function, and respiratory rhythm. Its abnormal expression or dysfunction is linked to diseases like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and irritable bowel syndrome, making HTR3A a potential target for psychopharmacological research and treatment.
