PCCA

The PCCA gene encodes the alpha subunit of propionyl-CoA carboxylase, a key enzyme in fatty acid metabolism. Known as propionyl-CoA carboxylase subunit alpha, this protein is commonly referred to as PCCA. It plays a crucial role in the conversion of propionyl-CoA to methylmalonyl-CoA, a step in the degradation of propionate. PCCA is involved in the Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 2D and Propionic Acidemia, where its dysfunction leads to metabolic disorders. Research into PCCA's signaling pathways and disease mechanisms is ongoing, with potential therapeutic targets emerging for drug development.
