PLA2G15

The protein encoded by PLA2G15 is phospholipase A2 group XV, commonly referred to as lysosomal phospholipase A2. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at the sn-2 position, releasing fatty acids and lysophospholipids, which are critical for lipid metabolism and membrane remodeling. This enzyme participates in pathways regulating lysosomal function and lipid homeostasis, interacting with molecules involved in cholesterol efflux and autophagy.
Dysregulation of PLA2G15 is linked to lysosomal storage disorders and metabolic syndromes, including atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Emerging research explores its role in neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease. While no specific drugs targeting PLA2G15 are approved, preclinical studies investigate small-molecule modulators to modulate its activity for treating lipid-related disorders.
