PTGS1

PTGS1, located on chromosome 9, is an enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a key precursor for prostaglandins and thromboxane. These prostaglandins are essential for a range of physiological functions, including the modulation of inflammation, pain, fever, and platelet aggregation. While PTGS1 is crucial for normal physiology, its overexpression is linked to various diseases, particularly those involving inflammation and cancer. High levels of PTGS1 can enhance tumor cell proliferation and resistance to apoptosis, which is why it's a target for numerous non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer medications.
