SPTLC3

SPTLC3, also known as serine palmitoyltransferase long-chain base subunit 3, has alternative names including LCB3, SPT3, LCB3, LCB2B, SPT3, hLCB2b, and SPTLC2L. SPTLC3 is a subunit of the serine palmitoyltransferase complex, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in sphingolipid biosynthesis. This subunit metabolizes lauroyl-CoA and myristoyl-CoA, producing C14 and C16 sphingolipid bases. SPTLC3 is crucial for sphingolipid synthesis, an essential component of cell membranes, and participates in various cellular signaling processes, including apoptosis, cell proliferation, cell migration, and inflammatory responses.
Abnormal expression of SPTLC3 is associated with multiple diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.
