SSTR4

Somatostatin receptor 4 (SSTR4) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) belonging to the somatostatin receptor family. It binds somatostatin (SST) and its analogs, triggering downstream inhibition of adenylate cyclase, which reduces cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels. This modulates cellular processes like proliferation, hormone secretion, and neurotransmission, with high expression in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral tissues such as the pancreas.
Dysregulation of SSTR4 is linked to neurological disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, where it impacts synaptic plasticity and memory) and neuroendocrine tumors. Selective SSTR4 agonists are under preclinical study for cognitive enhancement and tumor suppression, while early-phase clinical trials are evaluating their safety and therapeutic efficacy.
