Target Background

Function
Serine/threonine kinase involved in various developmental processes. During early embryogenesis, acts as a survival protein. During mid-embryogenesis, phosphorylates and activates trh, a transcription factor required for tracheal cell fate determination. Also regulates tracheal cell migration. Later in development, acts downstream of PI3K and Pk61C/PDK1 in the insulin receptor transduction pathway which regulates cell growth and organ size, by phosphorylating and antagonizing FOXO transcription factor. Controls follicle cell size during oogenesis. May also stimulate cell growth by phosphorylating Gig/Tsc2 and inactivating the Tsc complex. Dephosphorylation of 'Ser-586' by Phlpp triggers apoptosis and suppression of tumor growth.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The metabolic defects of cycG mutant animals are abrogated by a concomitant loss of Wdb, CycG presumably influences Akt1 activity at the PP2A nexus; Well rounded (Wrd), another B' subunit of PP2A in Drosophila, binds CycG similar to Wdb, and that its loss ameliorates some, but not all, of the metabolic defects of cycG mutants. 2. The developmental delay of these novel Akt1 hypomorphs results in a latent phenotype uncovered by generation of somatic clones PMID: 25889856
  3. these data show that Drosophila Trbl has a conserved role to bind Akt and block Akt-mediated insulin signaling, and implicate Trib proteins as novel sites of signaling pathway integration that link nutrient availability with cell growth and proliferation PMID: 25329475

  14. results show show that target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase and its associated protein rictor are necessary for AKT/PKB Ser473 phosphorylation and that a reduction in rictor or drosophila TOR (dTOR) expression inhibited an Akt/PKB effector PMID: 15718470
