ANGPTL8

ANGPTL8, encoded by the ANGPTL8 gene, is a secreted protein primarily expressed in liver and adipose tissue. Also known as betatrophin or lipasin, it regulates lipid metabolism by inhibiting lipoprotein lipase activity, thereby increasing plasma triglyceride levels and promoting fat storage in adipocytes. Emerging evidence suggests its involvement in glucose homeostasis through potential interactions with insulin signaling pathways.
Dysregulation of ANGPTL8 is linked to metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Its role in enhancing beta-cell proliferation has sparked interest in therapeutic development, though clinical applications targeting ANGPTL8 remain in preclinical stages, with ongoing research investigating its dual effects on lipid and glucose metabolism.
