CA6

Carbonic Anhydrase 6 (CA6), also known as Gastric Carbonic Anhydrase, is a secreted zinc-containing enzyme. It catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. Primarily expressed in salivary glands, CA6 maintains oral pH homeostasis, contributes to the salivary buffering system, and protects tooth enamel from acid erosion.
CA6 is linked to cholinergic signaling pathways involved in salivary secretion. Dysregulated CA6 expression is associated with xerostomia and Sjögren's syndrome. Drug development targeting CA6 focuses on recombinant CA6 preparations to alleviate oral dryness in patients with Sjögren's syndrome, though such therapies remain in preclinical stages.
