CD20, a transmembrane phosphoprotein characteristic of B cells, is present throughout B cell development, from precursor to mature stages, with the exception of plasma cells and hematopoietic stem cells. This antigen is markedly expressed in over 95% of B cell lymphomas, distinguishing it as a prime target for B cell-related disease treatments. CD20's function encompasses the modulation of B cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation. Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies against CD20, such as rituximab, eliminate B-cell tumors by engaging the complement system and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC). Furthermore, CD20 plays a role in B cell receptor (BCR) signaling and interacts with multiple cell surface proteins, underscoring its significance for B cell biology.
