FGF9

FGF9, encoded by the FGF9 gene, is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family. Its full name is Fibroblast Growth Factor 9, with common aliases including Glia-Activating Factor and Heparin-Binding Growth Factor 9. It exerts biological effects by binding to fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) and activating downstream signaling pathways such as the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt cascades, regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival.
FGF9 plays crucial roles in embryonic development, organogenesis, and tissue homeostasis. Dysregulation of FGF9 has been linked to various diseases, including cancers such as glioblastoma and breast cancer, as well as skeletal disorders. Currently, research on FGF9-targeted therapies is ongoing, with small molecule inhibitors of FGFRs being evaluated in preclinical and clinical studies for FGF9-driven malignancies.
