Glutathione S-transferase alpha 4 (GSTA4), also known as GST A4 or GSTA4-4, is a phase II detoxification enzyme. It catalyzes the conjugation of glutathione with electrophilic substrates like lipid peroxides, neutralizing their toxic effects and maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. This role is critical for protecting cells from oxidative stress-induced damage.
GSTA4 is involved in pathways regulating inflammation and cell survival. Dysregulation of GSTA4 has been linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, lung cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Recent research explores it as a prognostic biomarker for cancers, while small-molecule inhibitors targeting GSTA4 are under preclinical investigation for therapeutic use in malignancies.
