GSTK1

GSTK1, a member of the glutathione S-transferase enzyme superfamily, encodes proteins that are instrumental in cellular detoxification, particularly within peroxisomes where they catalyze the conjugation of glutathione to a broad range of hydrophobic substrates, aiding in their cellular removal. This enzyme plays a significant role in the secretion and dimerization of adiponectin, with its expression levels being inversely correlated with obesity, which helps to counteract the decrease in adiponectin levels caused by endoplasmic reticulum stress. Moreover, polymorphisms in the GSTK1 promoter region are associated with insulin secretion and fat deposition, indicating that GSTK1 might serve as a potential target for developing treatments for insulin resistance and related metabolic diseases.
