HBA1, the alpha-bead protein gene, is one of the genes that encodes the alpha-chain in adult haemoglobin. It is located on human chromosome 16, adjacent to the HBA2 gene. The expression product of the HBA1 gene is an essential component of haemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen in the circulation to all tissues of the body and for carrying carbon dioxide back to the lungs for gas exchange. The alpha-chain encoded by the HBA1 gene combines with the beta-chain (encoded by the HBB gene) to form a tetrameric haemoglobin structure, which is essential for maintaining normal blood function. Biologically, the normal function of the HBA1 gene is essential for erythrocyte maturation and haemoglobin synthesis, and its mutation can lead to haemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell anaemia, which affects the normal morphology and function of erythrocytes, and consequently the transport and release of oxygen. Therefore, HBA1 not only plays a role in haemoprotection and oxygen transport, but is also a key target for the study and diagnosis of inherited blood diseases.
