HSD17B13

Hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 13 (HSD17B13) belongs to the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase superfamily. Commonly referred to as HSD17B13, it localizes to hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum and regulates lipid metabolism—participating in triglyceride synthesis and fatty acid oxidation pathways.
Genetic variants of HSD17B13 correlate with reduced risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Drug development targeting HSD17B13 is underway; small-molecule modulators are in preclinical/early clinical stages to treat NAFLD/NASH by restoring hepatic lipid homeostasis.
