MASP1

MASP1, originating from human chromosome 3, is a crucial serum glycoprotein that activates the complement system via the lectin pathway, a key aspect of innate immunity. It forms a complex with mannose-binding lectin, leading to the generation of C3 convertase by cleaving C4 and C2, which in turn activates the complement system and aids in pathogen clearance. Additionally, MASP1 can directly cleave C3 to produce C3b, engaging the complement bypass pathway. Beyond its immune functions, MASP1 is also significant in the pathology of conditions like liver fibrosis and the progression of various tumors, underscoring its multifaceted role in both immune defense and disease pathogenesis.
