METRN

Meteorin (METRN), a secreted protein also known as glial cell differentiation regulator, plays critical roles in neurodevelopment. It promotes the maturation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells into myelin-forming oligodendrocytes and supports neuronal survival by activating JAK-STAT and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways.
Aberrant METRN expression links to neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS), where impaired myelin repair worsens pathology. Preclinical studies have explored METRN as a neuroprotective agent for MS and spinal cord injury, showing promising efficacy in animal models, though it remains in early development with no clinical trials initiated yet.
