MUC17 (Mucin 17) is a mucin protein mainly expressed in the gastric mucosa. It contains a large N-terminal domain and multiple glycosylation sites, which are responsible for protecting and lubricating the surface of the gastric mucosa, maintaining normal gastrointestinal physiological functions. In addition, MUC17 is involved in the pathogenesis and development of various gastrointestinal diseases, such as Helicobacter pylori infection, gastric cancer, and colon cancer. Recent studies have shown that the expression level of MUC17 is elevated in some gastrointestinal tumors, and is associated with increased invasive and metastatic capabilities of cancer cells. For example, high expression of MUC17 is associated with poor prognosis in cancers such as colon cancer and gastric cancer. Therefore, MUC17 has become an important target in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. Some studies have suggested that by regulating the expression and activity of MUC17, it is possible to inhibit tumor cell proliferation and metastasis, thus improving treatment outcomes. Therefore, investigating the mechanism of action of MUC17 and its potential as a therapeutic target is of great significance.
