MYL12B

MYL12B is a protein encoded by the myosin light chain 12B gene. Similar to MYL12A, it binds to the actin heavy chain to form an actin complex, jointly participating in processes such as cell motility regulation. Additionally, the phosphorylation state of MYL12B can affect the activity of the actin complex, thereby modulating muscle contraction strength and cell movement speed. In vitro studies have demonstrated that the diphosphorylated state of MYL12B results in enhanced MgATP enzyme activity and the formation of myosin filaments, which are crucial for the assembly of sarcomeric protein filaments. Overexpression of the diphosphorylated form of MYL12B leads to the formation of numerous sarcomeric protein bundles in transfected cells, whereas overexpression of the non-phosphorylated form results in a decrease in the number of sarcomeric protein bundles. This suggests that the phosphorylation state of MYL12B plays a pivotal role in the organization of sarcomeric protein filaments and contractile rings within cells. MYL12B plays a significant role in various diseases. Its phosphorylation level is associated with heart diseases such as myocardial injury and hypertrophy, as well as cancer. Consequently, MYL12B holds promise as a potential research target and biomarker for diseases like heart disease and cancer.
