NPTX2, also known as Neuronal pentraxin-2, is a protein encoded by the NPTX2 gene. It is also commonly referred to as Narp. This protein is involved in the regulation of synaptic strength and plasticity. It binds to AMPA receptors and modulates their surface expression, which is crucial for synaptic transmission. It participates in the glutamatergic signaling pathway.
Alterations in NPTX2 have been linked to several neurological diseases, including epilepsy and schizophrenia. In terms of drug development, there is ongoing research to understand how to target NPTX2 - mediated pathways to develop novel therapeutics for these neurological disorders. However, no drugs specifically targeting this protein have reached the market yet.
