SFTPA1

SFTPA1 encodes Surfactant Protein A1 (SP-A1), a core component of pulmonary surfactant. Also known as SP-A1, it maintains alveolar stability by reducing air-liquid surface tension in the lung. It also mediates innate immunity: binding pathogens (e.g., bacteria, viruses) via pattern recognition, enhancing phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages and activating TLR signaling pathways to trigger anti-infective responses.
Dysfunction or deficiency of SP-A1 links to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) in premature infants and adult acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Current research focuses on recombinant SP-A1 as a therapeutic agent—preclinical studies show it improves lung function in ARDS models, while early trials explore its safety and efficacy for NRDS and infectious lung diseases.
