SLC16A11

SLC16A11, also known as MCT11, is a member of the solute carrier family 16. SLC16A11 is a monocarboxylic acid transporter responsible for the transmembrane transport of pyruvate, participating in lipid metabolism processes. It is located on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and plasma membrane. SLC16A11 transports proton-coupled monocarboxylic acids, including pyruvate, lactate, ketones, and short-chain fatty acids. The direction of transport is determined by the concentration gradient of protons and monocarboxylate ions across the cell membrane.
Abnormalities in SLC16A11 function are associated with various diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. SLC16A11 is expressed in the liver, and its variants may affect lactic acid transport and triglyceride metabolism in liver cells, thereby influencing the development and progression of diabetes.
