SLC24A4

SLC24A4 encodes the sodium/calcium/potassium exchanger 4 (NCKX4), a plasma membrane protein belonging to the solute carrier 24 family. It mediates electroneutral exchange of 4 Na⁺ for 1 Ca²⁺ and 1 K⁺, regulating intracellular calcium homeostasis in various tissues, including retinal photoreceptors and neurons.
NCKX4 dysfunction is linked to retinal degenerative diseases and neuronal excitotoxicity. Its role in calcium signaling pathways makes it a potential target for neuroprotective drug development, though specific therapeutic agents are currently in preclinical investigation.
