The protein encoded by STYK1, also known as serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase 1, functions as a dual-specificity kinase involved in cell proliferation and survival signaling. It regulates pathways like PI3K/Akt and MAPK, promoting anti-apoptotic mechanisms through phosphorylation of downstream targets such as BAD and ERK.
Aberrant STYK1 expression correlates with various cancers, including breast and lung carcinoma, where it enhances tumorigenesis and metastasis. Preclinical studies investigate small-molecule inhibitors targeting its kinase domain, though no clinical candidates have advanced to late-stage trials.
