TUBA1C Background

Tubulin alpha-1C chain is a protein in humans that is encoded by the TUBA1C gene. Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. It binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha chain. Mutations in tubulin genes are now known to cause multiple human cortical malformations including lissencephaly, polymicrogyria, microcephaly, dysmorphic basal ganglia, and congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles [1].
