ZG16B

Zymogen granule protein 16B (ZG16B), a member of the C-type lectin superfamily, is also known as ZG16B_HUMAN. It localizes to zymogen granules in exocrine cells and binds mucin glycoproteins, contributing to intestinal mucosal barrier integrity by regulating mucus layer structure and protecting epithelial cells from pathogenic damage.
Aberrant ZG16B expression is associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease—its downregulation may impair mucosal defense. Current research explores its potential as an IBD diagnostic biomarker; targeted drug development remains preclinical, focusing on restoring barrier function via ZG16B-related pathways.
