AIFM2, full name Apoptosis-Inducing Factor Mitochondrial 2, is commonly known as FSP1 (Ferroptosis Suppressor Protein 1). It is an NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase localized in mitochondria and cytoplasm. Its core function involves reducing coenzyme Q10 to ubiquinol—an antioxidant that scavenges lipid peroxides, thereby suppressing ferroptosis, a regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation.
Aberrant AIFM2/FSP1 expression links to tumor progression, as it enhances cancer cell resistance to ferroptosis-inducing therapies. Drug development efforts focus on small-molecule FSP1 inhibitors to sensitize tumors to ferroptosis, offering a novel therapeutic strategy. Its role in oxidative stress-related disorders like neurodegeneration is also under active investigation.
