GDF11, or Growth Differentiation Factor 11, also known as VHO, BMP11, or BMP-11, is a secreted protein encoded by a human gene and is a member of the Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. GDF11 can bind to TGF-β receptors, leading to the recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors, thereby regulating gene expression. GDF11 plays a role in the development of the nervous system and other organ systems and may regulate the aging process.
Current research on GDF11 primarily focuses on the aging process and age-related diseases, including the promotion of cardiomyocyte proliferation, neuronal regeneration, and the proliferation and function of hematopoietic stem cells. The broad biological effects of GDF11 may include reversing cellular senescence during the aging process, reversing age-related pathological changes, and regulating organ regeneration following injury.
