ICA1

Islet Cell Autoantigen 1 (ICA1), also known as ICA69, is a membrane-associated protein highly expressed in pancreatic β-cells. It regulates insulin secretion by interacting with SNARE complex components like Syntaxin 1A, modulating the docking and fusion of insulin-containing vesicles to the plasma membrane, a key step in exocytosis.
ICA1 is involved in calcium-dependent insulin secretion pathways. As a major autoantigen in type 1 diabetes (T1D), anti-ICA1 antibodies serve as early diagnostic markers for T1D. Current drug development explores immunomodulatory approaches, such as recombinant ICA1 peptides to induce immune tolerance, though no targeted therapies have entered clinical use.
