NEFL

NEFL corresponds to the protein neurofilament light chain. It is also commonly known as NFL. Neurofilament light chain is a crucial component of the neuronal cytoskeleton. It helps maintain the shape and caliber of axons, which is vital for normal neuronal function.
In terms of signal pathways, it is involved in axonal transport and neurodegenerative signal cascades. Alterations in NEFL levels are associated with various neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Currently, there are emerging efforts in drug development aiming to target NEFL to halt or slow down the progression of these diseases.
