SELENOP

Selenoprotein P (SELENOP), also known as SeP or SEPP1, is the primary selenium-transporting protein in human plasma, harboring multiple selenocysteine residues. It delivers selenium to tissues like the brain and testes, supporting the biosynthesis of other selenoproteins essential for antioxidant defense and redox balance.
Dysregulated SELENOP levels are associated with selenium deficiency disorders (e.g., Keshan disease), cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, due to compromised antioxidant capacity. Current research focuses on its potential as a biomarker for selenium status and exploring therapeutic strategies to modulate its function, though targeted drugs remain in preclinical development.
