SSTR3

SSTR3, or somatostatin receptor 3, is a class A G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) with no widely established common aliases. It transduces somatostatin (SST) signals by coupling to Gi/o proteins, inhibiting adenylyl cyclase to reduce intracellular cAMP levels and regulating calcium ion flux. This receptor modulates downstream pathways including MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt, influencing cell proliferation, hormone secretion, and neuronal function.
SSTR3 is linked to neuroendocrine tumors (e.g., pituitary adenomas) and neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease—its expression in hippocampal neurons suggests roles in memory regulation. While non-selective somatostatin analogs (e.g., octreotide) have low affinity for SSTR3, ongoing research explores selective agonists/antagonists to harness its neuroprotective or anti-tumor effects, though no drugs targeting SSTR3 are currently approved.
