TAS1R2

The protein encoded by TAS1R2 is Taste Receptor Type 1 Member 2 (T1R2), a class C G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). It forms a heterodimer with TAS1R3 to function as the primary sweet taste receptor, recognizing natural sugars (e.g., glucose) and artificial sweeteners (e.g., aspartame). Upon ligand binding, it activates Gα-gustducin, triggering PLCβ2/IP3-Ca²+ signaling cascades that transmit taste signals to the brain.
Dysfunction of TAS1R2 links to impaired sweet taste perception (genetic or age-related taste blindness) and may influence dietary preferences associated with obesity. Drug development targeting TAS1R2 includes novel sweeteners to reduce sugar intake and therapies for taste disorders, with most candidates currently in preclinical or early clinical stages.
