CHGA

Chromogranin A (CHGA) encodes a soluble glycoprotein abundant in secretory granules of neuroendocrine cells and neurons, with aliases including CgA and chromogranin 1. It functions as a chaperone for peptide hormones (e.g., catecholamines, insulin) and regulates granule maturation. Its proteolytic cleavage yields bioactive peptides like vasostatin (vasodilation), pancreastatin (insulin inhibition), and chromostatin (calcium signaling modulation).
CHGA is a key biomarker for neuroendocrine tumors (NETs)—elevated serum levels indicate tumor burden in pheochromocytomas and carcinoids. It also correlates with cardiovascular risk: high levels predict heart failure progression. Drug development targets CHGA-derived peptides (e.g., pancreastatin antagonists for diabetes) and uses CgA-based imaging for NET diagnosis.
